Overview:
This book tells a story of a dystopian society in London, located in the nation of Oceania. Where Winston Smith, a man who has been a victim to public conditioning and rationing begins to truly see the reality of the society he lives in. In a place where even your own children could be spies and a controlling figure known as Big Brother is constantly watching your every move, he falls in love with a rebellious girl Julia. As the story progresses they take part in free thought, sex, and any expression of individuality, all which are illegal in Oceania. Eventually the thought police find them, arrest them both and take them to the Ministry of love. There Winston is beaten, brainwashed, and starved. In his last days there, he is put in room 101, every citizens west fear, and has his worst fear, rats, presented to him and ready to kill him by eating off his face. In efforts to save himself, he pleads that Julia is killed instead of him. With his rebellious side broken down and brainwashed once again, he is released back into London, where the novel ends with him accepting society and loving Big brother. |
