"I am Malala"
By: Malala
Overview:
As we embarked on our social enlightenment project, I found it fitting to read the well known memoir of the girl who stood up for her education and didn't let a bullet stop her. Meet Malala Yousafzai, a young Palestinian girl who grew up with a father who was never shy to speak his mind and expressed his political views through poetry, speech, and action. The readers instantly fall in love with the pure malala who sees the world around her in vibrant colors and the conversation about education that she must be a part of. In her village, girls are forbidden to go to school and receive an education, and the sexism that takes place around her is beautifully summed up in the chapter where she explains that when a boy is born, trumpets and fireworks are put on for display, and when a girl is born there is silence. SHe grows up to follow her fathers footsteps and was shot by the taliban on a school bus, only to survive and work with the UN to bring equality to girls like her. As someone who knows the true value of education it was truly breathtaking to read about girls across the world who don't let anything or anyone shut down their voices and who are willing to fight for their human rights and to show no fear to the world. |
